THE INSTITUTE was established in 1998 to promote independent analysis and public
discussion of issues in international economic relations - to help foster
foresight, initiative and leadership in restoring a sense of direction in
international economic policies. This it aims to do by.
-
stimulating public discussion of the underlying issues, especially in the
multi-lateral trading system, administered since 1995 by the World Trade
Organization;
clarifying issues through
studies and study groups that draw on published work, engage analysts in
universities, "think tanks" and professional firms and stimulate
interest among leaders of opinion in business, government and the media; and
developing a range of
activities that enable the Institute to respond quickly to events, to
initiate public debate and to champion ideas, proposals and initiatives.
More specifically, the mission is to help build consensus and support for the further
liberalization of international trade and investment - characterized these
days by the term "globalization". This is critical to further growth, development and prosperity in the world economy,
to raising standards of living worldwide. The mission has three dimensions, to contribute to.
promoting greater public understanding of the role of trade policy, the WTO sys-tem and the
international economic order;
restoring and maintaining support, domestically and internationally, for the
liberalization and reform of international trade and investment in manufactures, services
and agricultural products;
fostering a strategic approach to trade and related policies based on the convergence
of long-term national economic interests and the maintenance, development
and extension of the international economic order, founded on free-trade
principles, private enterprise and open competition.
The Institute's Board of Directors represents a wide range of experience, savoir
faire and expertise. It is chaired by Clayton Yeutter, of Hogan & Hartson, attorneys-at-law, former
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and before that U.S. Trade Representative. The President is Hugh Corbet, previously Director of the Trade Policy
Program, Sigur Center for Asian Studies, George Washington University, and
earlier for twenty years the Director of the Trade Policy Research Centre in
London.
A non-profit educational foundation, incorporated in Washington, D.C.,
the Institute is tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code. It is being funded by corporate donations and foundation grants and looks to a broad base of support
to preserve its independence.
